Multiple levels of performance are a staple marketing strategy within the showrooms of competitive brands. At Audi there’s ‘S’ and ‘RS’. At Subaru there’s ‘WRX’ and ‘STi’. Placing a Viggen model above the Aero would help add to the depth of Saab’s core product – the 9-3. It would also get as much, if not more, attention as the Turbo X and do so with a name that would resonate with younger buyers. Likely few in the rally generation born of Playstation know the Saab 99 was a pioneer in turbocharging nor what the letters SPG denote.
It’s important to note… a new Viggen wouldn’t have to be an RS 4 competitor. Audi has recently arrived from a long-faught, decade-long comeback and has built up some serious hardware. Saab is just beginning its own comeback and has fewer resources. You’ve got to walk before you can run though and leveling a Viggen against the likes of the BMW 335i, Audi S4 makes more sense for Saab.

nice looking car... now ditch the green gauges already.

So what's the Turbo-X?I understand your point, but in reality the Viggen was nothing more than a bodykitted 9-3 with the 2.3 transplanted from the 9-5 Aero. (I would know, I had one). The suspension work wasn't really anything to write home about. The interior was identical except for some really great seats that I miss.
So to me, the Turbo-X isn't much different for the new 9-3 as the Viggen was for the old 9-3.
And Viggens should only come in Lightning Blue, not white

The green is much easier to deal with IMO. Don't even get me started on that ultraviolet purple crap VW uses, though they thankfully have tuned it down somewhat with the MK5.

could be a sweet car if they stay away from the FWD platform and throw in a RWD or AWD

I'm more for Viggen as a harder-core Turbo X. Only 20 more hp, but 19-inch wheels, body kit and a few more interior bits. In as much, it'd be about as much (maybe more) as the Viggen was in its day to the 9-3, but it'd offer a little more and build the Viggen sub brand rather than a one-off model (Turbo X). Plus, the Turbo X is a done deal. They're not making any more.

Sorry, GM is having a hard enough time making the case for a new 9-3, let alone a niche model.

One "little" detail that might not matter if you are a Saab fanatic, but if the said Viggen will challenge the likes of the 335 and the S4 pricewise...Oh well, you get the idea.
#15
It would have to price a bit below if I were a product planner. The 335 and S4 are both higher hp, even with the Hirsch bump. Still, it's in the same ballpark and if packaged like above, it'd be the most aggressivel styled.
#16
Lets make it compete with the S4, give it colors like the S4, and wait.... chrome mirror caps like what?

And in Saab's defense, those yellow and blue colors are Viggen colors. Also, they didn't put the mirror caps on there, I photoshopped them on there for the story.

Nicely done!![]()
Over at the Troll Saab website didn't they say the Viggen name didn't resonate in Europe like it did in the states. Forget exactly why. Double meaning or odd translation or what have you.

Many would like a Turbo X variant in a different color though, that's for sure.

I hadn't heard that one. Since Viggen's the name of a Swedish jet though, that'd be kind of weird. Post a link if you fine it. I'd be curious to read it.

Eh? Red doesn't affect your night vision like any other color. Green is much harder on the peepers than red would be.

The sport version of the 9-3 should be just that... sportier.
Putting a super-smooth turbo six in a trim line marketed as the sport version is a mistake. What the car needs is an inline six or four with a very, very generous helping of boost. The powerplant is really the only thing holding back the current model. It needs to be much more raw. The suspension and handling in the Aero XWD models are fantastic, save for that hideous, still oversized steering wheel

I never said the Viggens didn't come in other colors, just that blue is the only one they should've
Monte Carlo yellow is stunning in person however.

Ive never really been a fan of Saabs until I saw the new 9-3 and the Turbo X, which I lust after constantly. I think the idea of a Viggen would be nice, maybe bring back the 4door hatch of the previous generation...
![]()
In reality, I have to agree with previous posters and say that unless a very strong case is made for its existence, I dont think the Viggen will make it to showrooms as GM has enough to worry about.

Looking pretty good. Finally something interesting from Saab. I don't know how they've managed to survive.

Get an LS3But honestly, although this would be great for Saab/GM, I highly doubt it will happen.

They already made that car, it was called the S60R and it was a disappointment (at least considering that when first announced, it was being compared to the M3).
